Thousands have gathered to oppose celebrating Australia Day in Brisbane.
As per the reports people in Brisbane have gathered in thousands to call for an end to the Australia day and mourning the oppression experienced by indigenous Australians in the last 250 years since Captain James Cook arrived here. Spots of rain did not affect the crowd that began to gather at Queen’s Garden from 10 AM. In the City Hall, close by more than 500 people were sworn as new citizens.
This is one of the most significant ceremonies of the state. Aboriginal flags and hand-painted signs dotted the crowd as music blared through the square. The event was started on a sombre note with a minute of silence to remember the community leader Sam Watson who passed away in November. Other speakers called out successive governments for their treatment of Indigenous Australians and called for the return of stolen land and wages.
